One of the main myths regarding Mandrake root is that when dug up it shrieks, and this thriek kills anyone who hears it of drives them mad. It has been said to expell demons and is important in many rituals. The root is mention throughout witchcraft books and mentioned in many books on spells.

My understanding is that the Mandrake root has the ability to increase the sexual prowess of the male in a relationship. It seems to have some validity, from its usage in the biblical book of Exodus in relationship between Jacob and Leah and Rebekka
