Ghost shrimp are great bottom feeders. They are fresh water shrimp that live 1-2 years and have a semi-translucant body. They will do best with smaller, less aggressive fish because larger fish will find them just too tasty! They build burrows so you need to have a sand or small pebble bottom, this is for their safty!

I've heard of lampreys and algae-eaters, and they look like a cross between a catfish and small shark. They have whiskers and they are black to grayish and I know there is specific fish literally called "algae eaters" that I've heard of, again they look like catfish or little sharks, kinda like pilot fish too.

For freshwater you can try placos, clown loaches, or any other cat fish. Their are also some fresh water shrimps that I have seen to do a good job for eating from the bottom. I would stay with the catfish for fresh water. For saltwater the best thing would be hermit crabs and different critters.

Try buying a Placostomas. These fish are not only cool looking but they keep the whole tank free of algae. You can buy them when they are about 3 inches long and they will grow to the size allowed in the tank. These fish can grow up to a foot in length if the tank allows it. Also try catfish.
