Take turns planning the date, that way each of you can be creative. Don't judge your spouse's choice for the date. Research free events in your area. Try a "theme" date such as a trip to the Firefighter's Museum and then incorporate fun things to do centered around "hot" like a wiener roast, hot tub, or a red nightie!

Do something you haven't done in a while, or something you've never tried before. Go to a local torist attraction perhaps, or a play? Be a kid again and play some miniature golf. That's always fun. Go for a nature hike, and pack a picnic lunch for the two of you to enjoy.

Checking out festivals in your area is always a good idea. You might find one nearby that ends up attracting people and activities that you enjoy. Be prepared to sift through a few duds though.

Picnic in a park, going to the movies, dinner at a restaurant you have never been to, day of skiing, day at the beach, going for a walk, seeing a museum, going for a drive, seeing a musical together, going into the big city for the day, mini golf, bowling.
