Anything purchased from a secondhand store would be considered environmentally sound, not to mention that you would need to look hard to find something that suits your friend's personality. Handmade gifts purchased at a specialized store would work too.

Soy candles are great, 100% natural, last 2-3x longer, and don't put off carcinogens. Look for a cotton wick (zinc/copper/metal free). Also find triple scented for a delicious treat.
