The biggest problem with smoking is that it is addictive, and can cause nicotine addictions that will last the rest of your life. It also causes lung and throat cancer.

In the short term you can develop bad breath, yellow teeth, and bad skin. In the long term you can develop gum disease, lung cancer, skin cancer, and chronic respiratory diseases. Tell him that unless he wants to carry around an oxygen tank when he's older, he should quit.

Aside from lung cancer which most people know about, emphysema is another threat, as is cancer of the mouth. Also smoking around people who are allergic can have bad results. If you want to tell him about more short-term consequences, chain smokers tend to lose teeth and have very foul breath. It won't make him appealing to other people.
