Make sure your deck is both clean and dry before starting. Even a brand new deck should be thoroughly cleaned. Also make sure that you have the weather in your favor. You'll want to take your time staining the deck, so that the end result looks good - and this will be impossible if you're trying to beat a rainstorm.

Prepare the are by pressure washing the deck. Let dry. Stain a small area at first to test your stain color. Stain your deck, and let the stain dry before using your deck.

I would recommend getting one of the deck sprayers. You can get one at any major store like Lowes or Home Depot. You simply fill it up with stain, get pressur in it and spray away. They save a lot of time and work awesome. Great for a big deck job.
