A problem I've seen several times is a burnt out motor. That stinks because you need to call in a technician to replace the old motor with a new one. It's expensive and it is a common problem once you have owned the unit for more than a few years.

Some washers have a little metal or plastic filter that goes in the line that connects it to the house's water supply. Sometimes the filter will become plugged and the water has to go somewhere. Sometimes it may end up flooding wherever the washer is just because a $0.55 filter went bad.
