The most common Irish symbol is the Celtic Cross. One of the first of these symbols can be seen at tombstones in Monasterboice. Look up Celtic, Germanic, and even Viking art for inspiration and ideas.

Research this carefully as there is a lot of confusion. The harp is the national symbol. The shamrock, representing the trinity, is the most popular symbol, NOT to be confused with the four-leaf clover, which has nothing to do with Ireland. Celtic designs are popular for tattoos.

Firstly a well-known shamrock symbol of luck. Then a pint of beer, of guinness better or of Bulmer's cider. Also the harp according to tradition had magical powers or the claddagh ring, symbolizing the engaged or free status in a relationship.

Well, there is the ever present clover that just about everyone know's about because of St. Patrick's Day, but I would suggest that you use the Celtic Love Knot.
