Network interface cards (NICs) are expansion cards that enable a computer to communicate over a twisted pair cable (or fibre or wireless) and over medium distances up to approximately 100m. Most likely you are using a network card to connect to your router providing you with internet access.

They are a card you can install in your computer to allow an ethernet cable (or possibly wireless signal) to be plugged in. This allows you to netowkr computers together to say share a printer, or more commonly to access the internet. Almost every new computer has a wired card.
