A caustic substance is a chemical substance that burns and it's corrosive. It destroys or eats away substance or tissue. It can be an acid or a base. As example of a base is the sodium hydroxide (NaOH), also known as caustic soda or lye. Among the caustic acids are sulfuric acid H2SO4, hydrochloric acid (HCl) and nitric acid (HNO3).
