What are causes for someone having controlling behavior?

This often starts from having a childhood with parental abuse,or parents with drugs or alcohol problems or any situations where they felt helpless to change things. As adults they never want to feel that way again so they try to control everything around them including the people they love.

Most controlling individuals were raised or were involved in a controlling relationship. Perhaps as a child this person had a lack of say in the house. Maybe this person was able TO control in their last partner.

While environmental factors play into someone with controlling behavior, it could also be a genetic predisposition to certain mental illnesses, like OCD, bipolar or even personality disorders. It can also occur due to low-self esteem on the part of the controlling individual.

All of the above reasons are valid, but it should be understood that some people have dominant temperament from birth that has nothing to do with environmental factors. Such people are simply born with a disposition to take charge. This can be a very positive trait if kept in balance.

Usually, a controlling personality develops from insecurities. Sometimes a person's early life may have been so traumatic and uncontrollable to them that they seek control in their adult life. They feel less afraid and more secure with an ordered environment. This cannot be sustained. It becomes a vicious cycle.

Controlling people create a world in their heads where they are always victims at risk of emotional damage, by inventing or exaduarating insults and actions against them. It is a delusion caused by childhood/teen neglect or abuse. The real victims are those around them.

I am one of the most controlling people in the world, and I limit everything my girlfriend does. I don't know what caused it, but I grew up in a very controlling home, and have had very bad relationships as well. It may have something to do with that.
