What are asymptotes in mathematics?

An asymptote is where, on a graph, a line approaches a certain number but never quite gets there. Like, if a function included a part that called for the number to be continuously cut in half, there would always be 1/2 left. The answer would never be zero. The function's line would approach it, but not reach it.

Asymptotes of a function y = f(x) are functions were either y or x tends towards those function as we approach infinity but never quite meet.
