What all is involved in inventing things? How do you keep ideas a secret? What about patents? Who does that?

An invention can be something radically new or a significant improvement to an existing device. To patent it, apply for a patent at the U.S. Patent Office. Keeping it secret is a matter of not discussing the invention at public events, not presenting it, and labeling everything "trade secret".

From concept, to sketch to prototype, keep working towards your idea and you will soon have an invention. As for patents, contact a patent attorney. This is a very complicated area of the law and it is not wise to attempt to patent an invention without legal counsel.
