If you want to show your Jack Russell its tail needs to be docked. It is considered a fault in the show ring if it's not done. Otherwise it's fine for Jack Russells to have their tails long. If you are to dock a tail, it needs to be done when the dog is 3-5 days old.

That is up to the owner. There is no need for docking and it serves no purpose. It is simply cosmetic. People seem to perfer the docked look on this breed so if you decide to go with docking it should be done when the pup is 3-5 days old.

If you're going to show your dog, you MUST dock its tail - the AKC standard requires it. If you're not going to show your dog, you don't need to.
