I worry that it will get lost or stolen at school.

It really depends on how old/responsible your kid is. I think age 9 might be a good age to integrate wallets into a kids life. Give them a couple dollars and a fake credit card or something just to see how they handle it.

Using a wallet can be a good way to teach responsibility. However, it is probably best to keep only a few dollars at a time in the wallet.
