You should be concerned about bloody diarrhea in a child and seek medical treatment. One cause specific to children may be ingestion of a poisonous substance which needs immediate evalution. Food poisoning also causes bloody diarrhea. In this situation, a child can become dehydrated very quickly. Ulcerative colitis is another cause of bloody diarrhea in children.

Red blood in a bowel movement is coming from low in the bowel, usually in the rectum. It is common during bouts of diarrhea for small vessels to break under the strain. Contact your physician. Children dehydrate quickly and the reasons for the diarrhea should be addressed right away.

Bloody diarrhea is not a good sign coming from anyone. For regular diarrhea in an adult, it might be safe to take over the counter medication. With a child, especially a child under twelve, it is always good to err on the side of caution and get it checked out immediately.
