Remove the plant from container; check the roots for black decay and/or slimy substance on roots. Clean container thoroughly with soapy water, rinse thoroughly. Make sure container has good drainage system. Remove roots that are affected and repot in fresh potting soil and water. After first time, water only when soil is dry to approximately one inch below surface.

Root rot mostly comes from over watering the plant, and not allowing for run off. Make sure that your container has holes in the bottom. If it does, and your still getting rot, add some gravel to the bottom before your soil.

Your spider plant has been very naughty and has been sneaking flies into its diet without your knowledge. It has the equivalent of the gout in humans. The only cure is withdrawal! You may have to stay close and provide comfort and moral support for a few days but it has to be done.

Well, root rot usually occurs if plant has a nutritional deficiency or you are over watering your plant. So be careful of these and from now on, use only adequate amounts of water and feed your plants with the right nutrition. It is a common problem but for now, remove the pot from its case and cut off rotted areas
