My goldfish has a ripped tail. He stays at the tank top. Why?

The black on the tail is a concern. It may be a sign of infection in the tank. If there are other fish in the tank he may be having a rough time with them. Look for signs on other fish. If he is alone, look for tank treatments that cover a field of bacterias.

The ripped tail most likely became infected and tail rot is setting in. It may still near the top because it cannot swim properly or it is avoiding other fish.
