Heavy breathing can be a sign of serious problems. It is a common symptom of heart problems in dogs affected by heartworm. You should immediately take your dog to the vet as this is definitely something to be concerned about. Even if your dog does not have heartworm problems, the situation can still require vetinary treatement.

There are a number of reason which cause heavy breathing. You do not specify if he has any other symptoms that may give a clue for what is the problem with your dog. You should take him to the vet to be examined to try and find the underlying cause of this heavy breathing.
