My daughter is turning 16. We're having a sweet 16th party. I'd rather have people give her money than trying to buy her something that she doesn't like. I thought of inserting a little card requesting "Shower of envelopes are Melanie's wish". Is that too tacky and rude?

It's tacky and rude. You assume that everyone owes her a gift and then you're concerned she will be displeased? Oh my. Shower Melanie With A Book of Manners, Grace and Gratitude.

It's poor etiquette to mention gifts at all in the invitations. If you must, try to let people know verbally or through the grapevine.

Yes and Yes. Too tacky and too rude. Those wishing to "shower" Melanie with gifts should be permitted to choose the gift, to do otherwise appears greedy and insensitive.

Yes, that is absolutely both tacky and rude. Do you want a child who believes people owe her gifts? Or do you want a child who understands gratitude. Choose accordingly.
