Certainly. "Karat" refers to the percent purity of the gold, much as "proof" refers to alcohol content. 24K gold is 100% gold. One "karat" is 1/24th pure gold. Proportionally, then, 9K gold would be 9/24th pure gold. So 9K gold is 9 parts pure gold and 15 parts something else (usually another metal).
