The Sphynx is actually a hairless breed of cat. Nothing would look like the "real" Sphinx- that is a recumbent lion with the head of a human, in Egyptian mythology, the most well known is the Great Sphinx of Giza, the statue near the Great Pyramids, noted for killing anyone who couldn't answer it's great riddle.

There is a breed called Sphinx, although it was developed in Canada only 44 years ago. It is also known as the Canadian hairless because it is a hairless cat. There are also two Russian Sphinx varieties; the Peterbald and the Donskoy (also known as Don Sphinx). The Peterbald has fur whereas the Donskoy does not.
