Is plain deodorant the same as the scented kind?

Plain deodorant has no scent. Basically it will prevent odors, but without the perfume smell some deodorants can put out. Scented deodorants have different fragrances, such as powder, which can put out a disturbing oder. I would highly recommend unscented for most common daily activites.

The basic ingredients are the same with scented and unscented and accomplish the same task. The addition of fragrance is the only difference.

Of course, plain deodorant works the same as the scented kind. The only difference is one has a scent and the other does not.
