Question by  Pauli (43)

Is it safe to run a car that has water in the oil?

My husband left the car hood open and I am afraid I got water from the rain into my oil.

It is not a good idea to run a car with water in the engine. Tear the engine apart an make sure it's clean then fill it with clean oil.

Leaving the hood open does not allow water to enter the engine unless you left the oil filler cap off. In that case, no, you should not run the car until you've changed the oil. Otherwise, just dry off damp surfaces with a towel and you should be fine.

Unless the oil cap was not on, you don't have water in the oil. Oil and water separate naturally, and water will evaporate with heat. Changing the oil is recommended.
