Is it safe to induce labor in goats, and how do you go about it?

Answer by  DixieDaisy (112)

Consult a vet who specializes in working with farm animals and/or goats. Inducing labor can be very dangerous without first making sure there aren't any pre-existing conditions and that your female has the proper vital signs. Fetal development will also be checked before even attempting this procedure.

You ought not try to induce labor cos goats have a tendency to get pregnancy toxemia. If you do regular visits with the doc it can be detected early and treated but if no doc is involved to watch what the goat eats it can end up badly for you.

Prostaglanin - 2mg/ml, Oxytocin- 20 USP units pre ml and Dexamethasone - 2mg/ml are used for inducing labor in does. One is to induce labor, another is to reduce inflammation/pain and the other is to expel the afterbirth. All these medications require a prescription in order to get them.

Here on our farm we only induce labor if really needed. The only way I know of is through the medications you listed here.  add a comment
