It is not poor etiquette so long as you invite the person whose life you are celebrating. Many dying people would rather see their friends and family gathered for a party while he or she is available to enjoy it too.

This depends on the individual's beliefs. If you hold a Celebration of Life while they are alive, then you are obligated to have them in attendance to see what others will say about them. Do not hold a Celebration of Life if it is against their beliefs.

It depends on the situation surrounding the person, if it is their wish to do this before they pass, then it would be acceptable.

It entirely depends on the people involved. The most important factor to consider is the wishes of the ill individual. If they agree and actively want to be involved in the celebration, then it can be a wonderful event. If the person is unable to give permission or the family is hesitant, it may not be a good idea.
