death

Question by  AcroPilot (14)

Is it okay to send a belated sympathy card, or should I just skip it?

I didn't hear about the death until 6 months later.

It is always okay to express your sorrow and sympathy to a bereaved person. Write the person that you just heard and say no more about yourself - just continue on to express your concern and sympathy. The person is not done grieving in six months.

Upon learning of a misfortune after much time has passed, a sympathy card would be rather inappropriate. If possible, a phone call would be more fitting, as it is a more personal expression that would convey both empathy for the tragedy and also your respect with regards to time lapsed.

You should send a sympathy card, whether belated or not. And if belated, it would be highly recommended to explain that you just did not know of that persons death.

I think you should send it... the person probably received a bunch of cards right after the death, and some people experience a drop-off of support after the first few weeks. Your late card might be quite welcomed because the griever is probably back to being without extra support.
