I think it's fine to wear a polo shirt while playing tennis. If you're really worried, see what your friends will be wearing.

Many tennis players will wear t-shirts because they are easier to find in fabrics that wick sweat away. However, it is possible to find wicking polo shirts as well. Either is acceptable.

As with most other styles of dress, tennis wear has become much more casual. This doesn't mean you can't wear a polo shirt or that you are required to dress down. Being comfortable and able to play well should be more important. A club may have specific rules.
