Is it normal for a new Craftsman FWD lawnmower to have very poor traction?

It feels like the balance has no weight on the front (drive) wheels even with an empty bag. It doesn't pull itself on level ground.

Firstly, I should say that Craftsman as a brand isn't what it used to be. Having said that, Front wheel drive does not offer nearly as much traction as rear wheel drive so this may be your problem. Consider a RWD mower if you have hills and what not. Also consider going across hills rather than up and down them.
