Question by  machouno79 (17)

Is gelatin really made from the hooves of horses?

I've always heard that, but it's pretty hard to believe.

That seems to be an old wives tale. Horse hooves actually are made of of keratin. Gelatin is made with collagen which comes from the skins, bones and hides of cows and pigs. They are boiled and filtered several times, dried out and then ground into a powder material to use in making products such as Jello.

no but it is made from the bones and skin and connective tissue of animals traditionally cows. but in current times they are using pig skin to make gelatin. I guess that's ok if you like pork rinds. Just seems gross to me though.

Actually, its made from the bones and skins of cattle, pigs and horses. It's made from collagen, a protein that makes up the connective tissue in animals. While it may seem strange, as long as you eat meat, you pretty much are eating it already. It's just never looked as colorful.

Historically, gelatin was made from the hooves of horses, as was glue. These days, however, science has found artificial substitutes, so any modern gelatin is free of any horse parts.
