Algae isn't usually good for the tank, but there is a big difference between brown and green algae. If you have bottom feeding fish, like plecos, they will eat the green algae. Brown algae is always bad.

The common green algae usually seen in fish tanks is actually a sign of a healthy tank,at least in small amounts.

Algae are not usually good for a fish tank since they use up the nutrient levels and cloud up the tank making it look ugly.
