Is a praying mantis an insect?

Yes. There are actually several species of mantises commonly referred to as praying mantises. They all have 6 legs, including the 2 they hold out in front that gives them the appearance of praying and have 3 body segments. They are all under the Insecta class.

Yes! The Praying Mantis is a great predator, and can be very beneficial to your home garden. They eat aphids, beetles, flies, almost any insect they can catch. They get their name from the way their front legs are held up and close together, as if they are "praying".
