Blockage, breakage or leakage of the smaller vessels of the brain is referred to as small vessel disease. And, unlike large vessels, small vessels cannot be operated on. When small vessel disease is present, one should check for other conditions (diabetes, thyroid issues, UTI, etc., B12 deficiency, etc.) because the presence of these conditions could lead to a rapid decline.

From your heart to the distant portions of your body (brain, skin, etc. ) your blood vessels get smaller. Small vessel disease affects these smallest vessels, often resulting in blockage. When blocked, the small vessels cannot carry blood to/away from your tissues. It can be caused by inflammation, genetics or cholesterol. Quitting smoking and medications are often used for treatment.
