It takes place when a cold front overtakes a warm front. It is the early stages of a cyclone. When this occluded front happens its in the early stages of the cyclone.

An occluded front is when a cold front overtakes a warm front and generally causes in temperature, dew point, and wind direction. It is the boundary between the existing col air mass and the new codler air mass. On solid weather maps it is usually represented by a solid purple line.
