I would use ftp as a file transfer medium to upload and delete data from the server on which my site is hosted.

You you FTP software such as filezilla to FTP pages and photos up to a website for your website. You can also ftp photos and files to a website for others to download. Mostly it is used to edit your website

You use an ftp-client to transfer the whole filestructure of your webserver to your local machine. There you can edit and test it, and when you're done upload it again.

Well as you probably already know ftp is a tool for transferring data to another computer or server. So if for instance you are a web developer and have a folder full of graphic for you site and you need to transfer them to you website's server you could use a ftp program to transfer them.
