If you have a layover, should you check your baggage?

If you have a layover and a connecting flight the same day, your bags will be jumped to your flight. It is always a good idea to carry on the essentials you'll need in the event your bags are routed in error: toothbrush, underwear, other personal items, medications, a book, etc. Never send anything through baggage claim that is precious.

Generally I would say that it is pretty safe to check your luggage even with a layover. The luggage will still arrive in your final destination. Generally you are allowed to have one carry on besides your purse (if you have a purse).

If you have a layover with no change of airline, your luggage should be fine. If you are changing airlines, you should probably stick to carry-on luggage only.
