If a URL contains dashes, as opposed to all words strung together, does that have a negative effect on search rankings?

I am trying to create domain names.

No, it does not. Rankings are more of a popularity contest for search engines. If you want a certain page looked at more then another, then you have to create a series of votes for it by linking ot it from other pages. The name must also be relevent to the content of the page.

I would expect it to actually be of advantage. Assuming the domain contains search relevant keywords. If they are all stuck to one another, a search engine might have troubles to resolve the individual words. If they are delimited by dashes, this would be easier. However, do not split up words, that are usually concatenated.
