It could be psychosymatic, your body is basically sending you signals, if you are stressed, your body will react to that stress and any alleviate, whether it's smoking or drinking alcohol (as examples) your body will react too. Smoking eases stress, big time, it curbs appetite and is basically a depressant, meaning it calms rather than exasperate conditions.

My feeling on this is that it is probably because the poisons from the smoke are not going to your lungs anymore. You can feel the back of your lungs if they hurt, in your back.

The pain you have in your upper back could be related to other things such as an aneurysm, or costochondritis, or pneumonia, pericarditis, or other things in all. There are a lot of things that causes this pain one has to find the exact cause by doing certain test such as Chest X-Ray etc...

Smoking decreases oxygen saturation levels within the body. What this mainly is an indicator of is that whatever is causing the pain is not getting as much oxygen, so the pain receptors aren't functioning as well.

This is probably because smoking causes veins to constrict so there is likely something in that area of pain which is swollen so when your veins open back up it is pushing on the offending area. I'd check with a doctor.
