How was US Imperialism in the 1900's different from manifest destiny?

1900's imperialism was military based, meant to protect American interests, and contain communism. Manifest Destiny was civillian-focused, meant to gain new land for Americans to live on.

Manifest Destiny was the idea that the United States, which started on the East Coast, would span and fill the North American continent. US Imperialism was the idea that the US had to have colonies to provide raw material for development as European nations did. This is why the US acquired Puerto Rico, the Phillipene Islands, and Hawaii.
