The best way to choose a cocktail suit that fits you and that you like is to go to a store that sells a few different kinds that let's you try them on. Once you find a style that you like, you should get it altered to fit you perfectly.

J.C. Penney and nordstroms or any main line department store have a menswear section that can recommend an outdoor men's suit. Outdoor men's suits are usually more stain resistant than indoor one's.

A cocktail suit is just a regular jacket with short pants. The more colorful the pants the better!
