Training gaited horses can be quite technical and really should be learned from someone who is experienced in teaching. You have to learn everything from how to properly seat your horse to parking, sacking out, conditioning the horse, ground tie training, flat walk and fox trot and a lot more.

Ya'll should've mentioned broken gait, slick trot, speed trot and square trot. Quite a bit for trainer AND horse to learn!  add a comment

The best place to work with your horse while training is a rounded pen. Great place to establish discipline and train for doing different gaits on command, parking out and even a good canter. That's the first step to training is finding the right arena and is considered essential.

If you are starting with a horse that is 2 years old or younger only start out with 10 or 15 minutes a session and work. up to 30 minutes slowly. Your riding ground should be level and shouldn't be sand based because it will place stress on joints.
