You should fertilize your lawn before you lay the grass seed. Spread a minimum of 2 inches of good top soil over your current lawn. Then spread an organic, slow release nitrogen fertilizer over the top soil. You are now ready to plant your grass seed.

This process is usually done in the early spring or late fall. This because the sun doesn't burn the seeds to stop them from growing. I would heavy rake the soil and spread grass sead over that area with another layer of soil and water daily. Snow will help also.

Use a starter fertilizer when you put down the seed. Make sure it is a starter grass seed fertilizer or else you will burn them out. Organici is always best to use.

Don't fertilize right after sowing new seed, it will kill the seeds. Wait untill the shoots are at least 2 weeks old to fertilize.

First place the grass seed in the needed areas. Then use weed and feed. The feed portion will be build your seed and the weed portion will kill weeds.
