How much does the average 40-year old have in a 401K?

I want to know if I am on target.

By the time you are 40 years old and have probably been adding money to a 401k for 15 years (sometimes more/less) plus the interest earned. This amount of time should have your nest egg in the lower hundred thousands, depending of course on your income.

Well I was 57 when I retired and the pension pot was approximately 750k which should give you a more than liveable pension, mine being final salary about 30k a year so I would say that you are on target if you carry on you wont be far wrong of the survival rate.

It depends on when you started to contribute, what percentage of your pay you put into your retirement account, and your investment choices within your 401K. Hopefully you'll have $200,000.
