There are a lot of college/universities because of need. Most are filled to capacity and expanding annually. Government entitlement programs make it possible for just about anyone to go to school, and so a lot of options are present in the marketplace. Including multiple campuses of a single institution, and proprietary schools, there are about 4300 schools in the U. S.

Colleges and universities are money making ventures just like any other business. Every state has at least two universities (University of??? &??? State University). In addition, there are several other Universities in each state. In Louisiana, there are four schools connected to the Louisiana State system and several other Universities named after certain cities.

There are over 5,000 colleges in the U. S. , maybe more. There are so many different colleges because there are so many types of careers students wish to choose.

There are about 4,000 total universities in the U. S. Some are specialized, some are religious in nature, and others are just steeped in tradition and have been around forever.
