Though an acre once was approximately the area one ox could plow in one day, the area of an acre is 43,560 square feet. This may be verified online by accessing a number of sites. When compared to the hectare, our acre measures about 40% of that footage.

An acre is defind a one surveyors chain (66 feet) by one furlong (660 feet, or 10 surveyors chains). Multiplying 66 X 660 results in 43,560. Any combination of measurments resulting in 43,560 square feet is an acre.
