Hanukkah lasts 8 days and it commemorates the miracle of the oil lamp in the new Temple. There was only enough olive oil to fuel the eternal flame in the Temple for one day. Miraculously, the oil burned for eight days, which was the length of time it took to press, prepare and consecrate fresh olive oil.

The 8 days and nights of Hanukkah (beginning at sundown on the 25th day of Kislev) are a remembrance of the Maccabees' fight against the Greeks to worship. When they won, they had enough oil to light temple light for one night, but it somehow lasted for 8 nights.
