Hanukkah lasts eight days. On the first day you light one candle; on the second you light two; on day 8, eight candles are lit. Another candle, the "shammes", lights the other candles; this complies with the rule that the eight candles are not to be used for illumination or other practical purposes. In all, 44 candles are lit.

During Hanukkah, traditionaly they lit for about 8 candles and a total of 44 candles lit after the nine days. You light a total of 44 candles including the shamish.
