It should take about 2-3 weeks for it to completely heal. There will be initial pain, much of which will be in the first week, with healing in 2-3.

I have had an abscess and had to have the tooth removed. It did take a couple of days for the soreness to ease and the gum to heal it was quite painful and could not eat much for a couple of days. It is best to go to the dentist as soon as possible because of infection

The tooth is usually tender to the touch for up to a week. But by two to three weeks the abscess should be fully healed and pain free.

The abscess often causes bone loss in the jaw, but x-rays taken 6 months later should show new growth (i.e. healing). Immediately following the root canal, however, the patient will experience healing in the form of reduced pain.

I had an abscessed tooth and my dentist gave me 3 days worth of antibiotics before doing the root canal. I was totally healed and pain-free in 3 days.
