From NYC to Sydney (through Los Angeles or San Fran) is about 21 hours flight time. The Los Angeles - Sydney flight is about 14-15 hours. All in all, nearly an entire day is spent in the air!

The flight from NY to Australia depends on which area of Australia you are traveling and if you are flying direct. Qantas flies direct flights from JFK to LAX and then onto Sydney. That flight is 22 hours with a brief stop over in LAX while they clean the plane. Sometimes you have to get off, sometimes you don't
