The Roman Empire was one of the first civilizations developed along lines that are familiar to us today and as such can teach us much about politics and society as well as the wealth of scientific breakthroughs and artistic endeavours that still enrich our culture

The history of the Roman Empire has several aspects that are relevant to current events. For instance, before Rome was an Empire, it was a Republic governed by the Senate. Studying how the Senate lost power to the more autocratic form of government provides us some insight into the actions of contemporary societies may be moving away from democracy today.

The Roman Empire spread across much of modern Europe and parts of Africa. These places were affected by the conquest in ways that are still seen today. Roman culture, inventions, and legacy have been important influences on the West even in current day.
